Upon recommendations of two daughters, my husband and I watched Music and Lyrics with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. It's a romantic comedy. The basic plot is that an 80s has-been pop star needs to come up with a song right now to supply to the hottest young blonde pop star of the day. The guy can write melodies, but not lyrics. Turns out that the lady watering his plants has a knack for putting words together in just the right way. So they begin to work together under an unreasonable deadline.
This is one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. The language is tamer than much of what's on prime-time tv. The unchaste behavior is implied but not seen, and sex is a very minor part of the plot. (There is, however, "dancing" that is typical of rock videos today.) No violence. We started laughing at the introductory scene which shows the hit music video of the 80s has-been fellow, and kept laughing throughout! This is one I'll want to see again.

Susan,
ReplyDeleteI love that movie! I have seen it twice and we play some of the music over the computer. Hugh Grant actually sings! I kept thinking about telling you about this movie 'cause it is just fun...like that movie where the people are so happy they are running down the street...doing that thing you do. I am so glad you Blogged about it. Pop!
Thanks for the recommendation--I'll have to check it out at our library (I've seen it there).
ReplyDeleteWe watched "Holiday" with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn last weekend, and enjoyed it so much that we watched it again the next night. It's a good one if you like 70-year-old movies.
I TOLD YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen it goes down in price in a few years, I'm going to buy it... along with Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries.
And I just found out today that Get Smart is being made into a movie with Anne Hathaway as Agent 99!
I won't be changing the plates just yet, so they'll be fine.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes to Milwaukee County.
Thanks!
(could you bring the kitten-squirting water bottle to Anthea's on Sunday? And the tags are 60, right?)
I'll try to remember the squirt bottle. Tags are $70 now, Rachel. One of those taxes they raised that they seldom get caught on.
ReplyDeleteRachel, did we watch "Holiday" that Mrs Frank recommended? I have the feeling we did, but I'm not sure, and you're more likely to remember. Cary Grant and Kathryn Hepburn sure sounds like a nice combo.
Having grown up on 80s music we loved this movie as well. They did such a good job with the 80s hair and video that we couldn't stop laughing at how corny that time period now seems!
ReplyDeleteI saw this movie with Naomi and laughed so hard I scared Saranita several times! I cringed at how well they portrayed the 80's pop groups. It embarrased me much the same as Forrest Gump....which was talking about my generation.
ReplyDeleteI did see it a second time the same day so that my dear husband could howl too!
Well, I feel better that y'all like it too. On the one hand, there's so much in the movie that's just hilarious. And yet, I can't help but think that the music videos (not the 80s ones, but the one with the blonde) show the same stuff that's going on at the strip joint around the corner. I wish they'd made it without quite so much of that kind of dancing. But I suppose on the next run-through, I can hit fast-forward.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the suggestion. I just moved it to the top of my Netflix queue.
ReplyDeleteBy the way--I wrote about you.
