Narnia 2

We went to see Prince Caspian last night. It was okay. Too many battles. Granted, this book is probably the most battle-intensive story in the series. But I can see why BBC put this story into only one hour. I'm glad we went to see it, but I have no desire to see it in the theater again. Dvd's will be soon enough.

There were two little things I noticed and really enjoyed. At the start, when Caspian and his tutor were hiding, they slipped into the wardrobe in his bedroom... and didn't quite close the door. After all, it would be very foolish to shut oneself into a wardrobe. :-)

And I noticed on the catapults and ballistas in the final battle-scene that the enemy's weapons had Tash on them. I thought that was a cool thing to do to unify the series.

And boy, did Lucy grow up since the first movie was filmed!

  1. Dawn Treader is next!!!

Tark told me that they plan to do Dawn Treader, Silver Chair, and then The Last Battle, and may or may not do The Magician's Nephew and The Horse and His Boy.

Apparently the creation of Narnia and the Pevensie side story don't fit in well enough to make movies... sigh

  2. I noticed the wardrobe thing too, I thought it was neat.
Overall I liked it as a movie, but considering how good the first one was... it was a little disappointing.

  3. After this movie, I'm actually kind of concerned about the others. I don't know. This one departed so far from the books... I mean, it was a good movie - but it definitely was *not* Narnia. In fact, I can't help but think that C.S. Lewis would have been saddened by it.

Considering the absolutely huge slap in the face that the next two give to public education, secularism, etc. I can't imagine those themes will be entirely present. Which means that they'll have to alter the story, again.

I wish they would just create movies "inspired by" Narnia or something, now. The first was GREAT. But now they seem to be keeping just enough to the books to stay "Narnia" but stray so far from them that it's not the same Narnia.

I don't know. It was an alright movie. I was just disappointed by it, and couldn't really enjoy it as much as I otherwise might have once I realized just how terribly inaccurate to the book (and themes) it was going to be.

I just don't understand why they need to "create" excitement and such in an already perfectly fine (and exiting and loved) story. Argh. Stupid artsy director people.

Oh - and Reepicheap was ALL WRONG, by the way. He was a comic relief figure in this movie. He reminded me of Puss 'n Boots from Shrek when storming the castle (then, after the movie, I find out that the director for Shrek is the producer for Prince Caspian... erg). He's supposed to be small but honorable and full of courage!

And going just off of the movie, the scene where Aslan roars at Trumpkin just didn't even make any sense!

I don't know. Sorry to rant on your blog, Susan, but I just thought the movie was riding off of the last one. Which is SO SAD since all they had to do was stick to a children's book! It's not even like trying to stick to LotR or something. It's a children's story for Pete's sake! How hard is it to write a good film adaptation of a children's story???

So behind it all, I see them ripping the themes apart. Which, for me, completely and totally destroys Narnia. And I really have no interest in the shell that is action and adventure that gets left over... Erg...
