Ouch!
Oh, the pain!
Ouch ouch ouch!
I neeeeed to get rid of stuff in the house. It doesn't hurt much to send clothes to Goodwill. Weeding out toys is a little uncomfortable, but do-able. But books?
Ouch!
What if we need them later?
They're good old-fashioned books, and you can't find those kind of things in the libraries or even the bookstores any more.
The kids might need these for their kids someday.

I sure do like books.
I want my library to grow and grow and never ever shrink.
(Y'know, I don't think my eldest could even DO what I'm doing right now.)

The only time I've gotten rid of books is when I've acquired a hardcover copy of a book I had previously owned in paperback- and then I gave the paperback to Katie.
ReplyDeleteSo, no... I couldn't. Not at all.
Hey, what are you doing looking at blogs at 9 in the morning?
ReplyDeleteStarting work at 9:30, because I'm closing...
ReplyDeleteI hate to quote a former president, particularly THAT former president, but...
ReplyDeleteAh feel your pain!
We've taken six vanloads to Goodwill so far this month, and many of the boxes contained books. I felt bad when dd24 was shopping at Goodwill last week and found one of her childhood books..had her name inside on one of her beloved panda bookplates. But we just can't keep all this stuff...not even for my not-yet-here grandchildren :(
Next up on the purge list: favorite baby clothes (sniff!)
>>when dd24 was shopping at Goodwill<<
ReplyDeleteOh no! How disappointing for her! I told the girls that I wanted them to check over the piles of stuff in the garage, to see if there's anything that simply cannot go. (Well, actually, it would still GO, but it might go to their places instead of mine.) But we didn't really look over the books and toys like we should've while they were here.
I threw out all the broken Playmobiles, and I hope that doesn't induce trauma anywhere. (By the way, Rachel, I have your whole box of Playmobile that is going to have to take up residence elsewhere pretty soon. But it didn't hit the trash or the give-away pile.)
Almost all the baby clothes are gone. I have one box of maternity clothes and a few baby things.
I keep thinking that these good educational toys are worth something! But when I did a little web-browsing on ebay, I see that things like Gearopolis are only worth a few dollars. Oh, ouch ouch ouch. So I've been giving myself the speech that I am in ecstasy when I find a treasure at Goodwill, and hopefully my treasures will give some stranger the same thrill. I remember the days when I came home bubbling that I found an Aristoplay board game for $2, or a Duplo table for $8. Those kind of things brought excitement for days, and I still think back on those finds with fond fond memories. So I suppose that's what I'll be doing for some other mommy as she shops for Christmas gifts at Goodwill instead of Toys R Us. I just wish there were a way to get those toys into the hands of other mommies who would appreciate them, instead of letting these things bang around in the back room of a Goodwill store.
