God Relented

Our story today is from Exodus 32, the story of the Israelites' worship of the golden calf at the foot of Sinai. Pastor pointed out that Moses interceded for the people and "God relented." But had the people repented yet? Nope. They were still scamming themselves into believing that they were worshiping Yahweh, calling the golden calf by the name of the true God. So it wasn't their contrition that caused God to relent; they didn't even know yet that God was angry at what they were doing. The thing that caused Him to relent from doing harm was His promise to Abraham, and Moses' appeal to remember His mercy.
