For the interest of those with my mom's genes...
When my jaw locked up the other day, I noticed it was when I was chewing while holding the telephone receiver between my ear and my shoulder. (No, I wasn't talking with my mouth full. I was on hold for a long time.) It made me wonder if better, straighter posture while eating might reduce the clicking/locking problems just a little.

Susan, I've diagnosed with TMDS (or TMJ) so I am familiar with the jaw clicks, too. A few years ago, I read a book about it and it did mention that correct posture can help. The jaw joint sits at the topmost part of the spinal column and is affected and affects it. Also, some people with jaw problems experience back pain, leg pain another problems because of jaw misalignment. While I have not a clue how to make it go away, it did help explain why my jaw always bothered me after sitting on the phone all day at work using one of those phone rests (they are apparently the worst for jaw problems). If you need to some help unlocking your jaw after it locks, try a hot rag. Moist heat seems to help. --From a fellow clicker, Michelle
ReplyDeleteSince I got that mouthguard to wear at night, mine has improved dramatically. Now I only wear it for a couple nights if I feel ANYTHING going on in the jaws. Best $85. I ever spent.
ReplyDeleteWow, Susan, just another thing you and I have in common.
