16EE

Bigfoot has no shoes. He has some flipflops I bought for $45. (That's what happens to shoe prices when your cute little child grows up ... and up and up ... and becomes Bigfoot.)

It's getting cold. There's snow on the ground. My son Bigfoot can't live in flipflops all winter. But where to buy shoes that big?

Visiting my folks today, something came up about shoes. Eureka! My dad is a bigfoot too. Not as big as my son. But still a bona fide bigfoot. While we were in their city, we decided to go shop at their shoe store. Wow -- those people know how to fit shoes. And they know about feet. And they work with the podiatrists at the hospital.

I had to pay a horrifying price for a pair of black tennis shoes that will have to suffice as everyday shoes, boots, and dress shoes. But my kid has shoes! Real shoes -- the kind where his toes are covered! And he has the comfort of having a pair of shoes that actually FIT and don't pinch his toes unmercifully. At the moment, I feel on top of the world for getting some brownie-points for good momming.

We also know where we can go to buy another pair of shoes when he outgrows these and goes to [gasp!] size 17.

  1. My daughter was wearing sandals until a few weeks ago, too--not because of the size of her feet but because of the difficulty of finding a pair of shoes that she thinks are comfortable. We finally found some that I think she can live with for the winter--low-heeled black boots that will serve as both dress and everyday shoes. But I got lucky--they were about $12 at Wal-Mart (sssh, don't tell the Wal-Mart haters).

  2. I feel your pain! Philip stopped growing at size 15...the largest size available at a store close by called Shoe Carnival. We don't look for deals anymore...now we just look for a shoe available in his size. And yes, the price is anywhere from 60-80.00! (Sports shoes are even worse!) We do ask him to help pay for his shoes, hoping that he will take care of them better. (I don't know how that has worked, but at least he is helping out.) Hopefully Andrew will stop growing soon!

  3. I am SO HAPPY the boy has shoes that fit! And it may mean you have to bring that dear, sweet boy back again to get shoes in the future. No more digging ice out the gutters while barefoot in Birkenstocks! (mom)

  4. Laura, our Payless Shoes usually have a couple of pairs of 15s in stock. Not many. And that's the biggest size, so we're shot. I didn't even ask the price of the shoes we bought; I found out when she rang them up. I would've been thrilled with only $60 or $80. But it was SO good to hear Andrew exclaim happily when he put on his shoes today, "Hey! They go right on my feet! I don't have to wiggle and fight and struggle to get my feet into them!"

Just because he has shoes, Mom, doesn't necessarily mean he won't be wearing sockless sandals in December in the future.

Cheryl, I'm glad you finally found something for her!

  5. My Bigfoot (who now lives in St. Louis) is a size 16. We discovered that sporting good stores like Sports Authority occasionally get in a shipment of big shoes (16-20) for really good prices. My son's most successful shopping trip netted him three pairs of shoes for $20! Last year he found a nice pair on sale at the Nike outlet in Kenosha. Worth a visit when you're over that way!

  6. Sports Authority is something we'll have to learn more about! Thanks, Barbara!

  7. Susan,

Jim wears a size 14 EEEE. Prior to ten years ago, we had great difficulty finding shoes, and usually found shoes that did not fit. Thank goodness he is a carpenter, as we have always been able to find workboots, thus he wore work boots most of the time. I now know wear to find most any type of shoe, unfortunately, they are not all at the same store.

  8. Cathy, the guy we bought the shoes from told us about Stan's Bootery as a place that might be closer for us. When I googled it, the map showed that it's about a mile north of Pastor Wiest's cemetery, so I know about where it is. Just wondering, though, do you have a place closer to you?

  9. :) I feel your pain! I'm most grateful that since my-daughter-who-shall-not-be-named-just-in-case-she-reads-this-and-finds-out-I'm-talking-about-her-shoe-size-online is a girl, she can always shop in the men's section for tennies.

I am also very grateful for whoever it was at Payless that made the decision for them to start carrying women's size 12s!

  10. Jim has bought limited shoes at Stans, specifically, Birkenstock sandels, though my daughter who inherited her dad's WIDE feet (Kristen) bought many shoes there. (Did she have fun with late stage pregnancy and shoes!) Jim has gotten tennis shoes at the Good Balance store next to Stan's in Brookfield. They have every size in limited styles, but they do not look so orthotic. Dress shoes, go to Men's Wear, Jim found the most comfortable black shoes ever! Not a huge selection but they fit and look very nice.

  11. Thanks, Cathy! Sounds like Stan's must be all around the metro area. We tried to palm off (... I mean, SELL...) a lot of books today at Half-Price Books, and noticed that there was a Stan's near that corner too. If I recall correctly, Men's Wear was where Gary found some good suits at good prices.

Tell Kristen to have all her babies in summer so she can go "barefoot and pregnant."
