Formal Wear

The day of the wedding was a mite chilly. Matt's mom pointed out that men's formal wear involves long sleeves, ties, and jackets. But women's formal wear involves spaghetti straps. Now, how much sense is there in that??

  1. This especially doesn't make sense to a girl who, like your Rachel, is ALWAYS freeeeeeezing!

I think it has something to do with the amount of skin revealed by said formal wear. Apparently to be formal men have to cover as much of their bodies as possibile, while women must "dress up" with as little fabric as possible. Haha. ;o)

You have all been in my thoughts and prayers over the past few weeks and I am very glad to hear that the wedding went well -- and that you weren't stuck outside in the rain! :o)

  2. So what you're saying is that men have hideously ugly shoulders and backs, and women have beautiful shoulders to be shown off???

  3. To be fair in presenting the other side, as one who grew up where the summers were often 115 degrees...

Men have to wear those things regardless of the temperature, and it isn't even just formalwear...daily business attire is that hot, too.

And men say they are not a
    slave to fashion!!!!

I had the opposite problem. I got married in July in a church that was not air conditioned. Though the dress was off the shoulder, there still was layers and layers of fabric. I thought I'd pass out!

I can sympathize with pastors who are wearing black, and then an alb or cassock and surplice on top of that.

  4. I remember reading a Dave Berry article about women's formal dresses. Basically he said it was to make the men act gentlemanly and give the woman his suit coat when she gets cold.

I think that makes a certain amount of sense.
