First Communion
Pr Stuckwisch mused a bit on Friday, in light of dear little Oly's first communion today. It's a long long blogpost, which will put off a few of you. Maybe it especially touched my heart because of my love for the children of whom he wrote. But if anyone were to wonder whether children are "too young" to be ready for receiving Jesus in the Supper, this is necessary reading.

Pr. Stuckwish's post brought tears to my eyes. :) Thanks for pointing me to it.
ReplyDeleteDitto to what elephantschild said. I have wondered for a long time why confirmation and first communion are so inextricably linked. Because he attended parochial kindergarten at age 4, my son started on a track that allowed him to be considered an 8th grader and to be confirmed and receive communion last year. His best friend, on the other hand, was not confirmed--and thus did not start receiving communion--until this year, even though he is the same age as my son (and just as spiritually mature). I look at my 11yo daughter and know that she is fully ready and don't understand why she must wait 3 more years. It makes no sense. Pastor S.'s post, on the other hand, is eminently sensible. Thanks for directing us to it, Susan. I hope others are listening.
ReplyDeleteThanks for calling this to our attention, Susan. It was a beautiful post.
