Incited to Prayer?

Pastor tells us that one of the blessings of tribulation is that it incites us to pray. He says that people can go on their merry way, thinking everything is hunky-dory, but when sickness or trouble strikes, then they're more inclined to hear what Jesus has to say and to pray fervently.

But boy, when I get sick, I am not incited to pray. Just the opposite. I lie there on the couch or in bed and think about how much it hurts and how miserable I feel. And I cough and blow my nose and try to force myself to drink juice past my sore throat. Prayer is just way too much effort. Sleep is everything!

That must make me really bad.

  1. I hate being sick, but here's my theory - it makes me slow down, even stop at times. And I don't normally do that on my own. :)

    Hope you feel better!

  2. I understand totally! It disturbs me that when I have had surgeries or injuries, it is hard to focus long enough to pray or read the Bible, a devotion, or ANYTHING. I've wondered if it was meds, but you don't take those. Are we just bad together?

  3. Reminiscences of Gen 3.... "But God, it was the mother You gave to me. SHE made me do it!"
    ;-)

Yeah, Mom, we're bad together. But, boy oh boy, putting garlic on my feet has done a lot to improve the situation. It helped earlier too. But I got so much better so quickly that I thought I was on the mend, and quit applying the garlic. Boy, that resulted in a quick downhill spin!

And Esther, you're right, it has definitely stopped me. From everything except answering the phone which is ringing like crazy. But if they are willing to listen to me cough at them, I'm happy to get some of these insurance/repair matters dealt with.

  4. I forget to pray, too. I think maybe what your pastor said is a little too simplistic. I don't think that at the first sign of trouble we run to God. I think often it is more when trouble has come and has been around for a while...at first I think we assume it will go away, and then we are absorbed in how bad it is...and then maybe we throw in blaming God that things are so bad...and then we cry out to Him and ask Him for help....sometimes...at least one would hope. But when it comes to regular sicknesses, occasional trials, etc. God would like us to turn to Him, but often we don't. Just like our kids try to "fix things themselves" before we find out about things or they come to us.

I'm so thankful that God isn't sitting in the corner, tapping His fingers going "you know you should've come to me for help..." He's happy whenever we do come to Him, and He helps us (1st article) even without our being smart enough or good enough to figure it all out on our own....Wow...I am so thankful for that. I like to think I am on my own sometimes...suffering, competently handling. HA

Well, Lora, when I summarize hours and hours of teaching into two sentences, of course it's going to come off a little simplistic.

As for the garlic I've done it three times now and had good results. Not like the "instant better" that happens when you take penicillin for strep throat. But still a big improvement in a short amount of time.
