  1. Susan,

Thank you for doing this project. I have been slowly working my way through things but haven't had much time to get far. This is information that is quite useful to those of us who are concerned about the state of hymnody in the church.

Your work is very much appreciated!

  2. Yes, thank you. I have not seen the new books yet. They have removed a lot of Gospel and instruction it seems.

  3. Marie, they may have removed a lot of Gospel, but they have also put in a lot of Gospel. For example, LSB has

To Jordan Came the Christ, Our Lord
    Lord, Enthroned in Heavenly Splendor
Wide Open Stands the Gates Adorned With Pearl
    From God the Father, Virgin-Born
    My Song Is Love Unknown
O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High
    At the Lamb's High Feast
By All Your Saints in Warfare
Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending
    Not Unto Us
God's Own Child, I Glady Say It
All Christians Who Have Been Baptized
    Christ Is the World's Redeemer
    Evening and Morning
    Thy Strong Word
    Baptismal Waters Cover Me
    Water, Blood, and Spirit Crying
    The Infant Priest
    Jesus, Once With Sinners Numbered
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
    Prepare the Royal Highway
Hear Us, Father, When We Pray
    In Thee Is Gladness
    The Gifts Christ Freely Gives

LSB has improved some hymns from TLH, a few of which are --
Luther's hymn on the 10 Cmdmts
    Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel
Hark, the Voice of Jesus Crying
Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
    The Royal Banners Forward Go
    Jesus Sinners Doth Receive
    Jesus Christ, Our Blessed Savior

as well as some improved tunes to good ol' texts.

  4. Oh, and one other thing -- a lot of what was dropped from TLH were hymns that were just so-so, and even a few that were bad.

  5. Susan,

Wow! Incredible work! Thank you so much for putting these lists together. Would it be ok if I printed these lists out?

Also...I've been trying to figure out the significance of the three groups in each listing. All I've come up with is...hymns that should be in LSB, hymns that are not critical that they're not in LSB, and hymns that are good they're not in LSB. I'm I close? I'm thinking not, but can't come up with anything else.

We are going to be attending the workshop on the 11th of this month. I can see that these lists will be very helpful in our decision. Our congregation is very attached to TLH.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

  6. Mrs Lotz,
yes, it's okay if you print out the lists.

As for the "hard work" that y'all seem to think I put into this, it wasn't that hard. I had to check out the hymnal. I had to know what was there and what wasn't. The only "work" that I put into it was typing it into the computer.

I think LSB is an excellent hymnal. It is not as much better than TLH as I had hoped it would be. For me, these lists are mostly for the sake of remembering to hang onto some of the lovely things that are in TLH that got left out of LSB. But as you can see from the long long list of hymns that were left out, for the most part the hymnody committee made pretty good decisions. I mean, swapping TLH's "I Gave My Life for Thee" for LSB's "Baptismal Waters Cover Me" was the right thing to do! (Of course, it's not a one-to-one correspondence, but still, ...)

  7. Regarding the question Mrs Lotz asked about the groupings within each list --
It's kinda sorta by order of importance. But I didn't want to spend much effort dividing up things. For example, on the hymn list, the last grouping is hymns that I won't be sad if we don't sing again. Some of them are good and some are bad. But I just threw them all together under the concept of "I won't miss them." The first group in that list are ones where I think the hymnody committee seriously botched it by leaving them out. The middle group is a list of hymns where we've lost something, but maybe that can be justified when you look at what we "traded up" for. (Let's just not look at the ones where we "traded down"!)

In the list of significant translation changes, the final group is where there's improvement. The first group are ones that I am really kinda distressed over; sometimes it's doctrinal; sometimes it's about the poetry; maaaybe sometimes it's just emotional (although I don't think it is). The middle group is where the changes seem to give us a hymn of equivalent quality, or where there are some lines that are greatly improved while at the same time some other lines have been toned down from their previous beautiful imagery.
