Presidential Primaries

Given the lateness of my state's primary, I figure I don't have to be in any hurry to make up my mind. There are things I like about Ron Paul and things I like about Fred Thompson. If we want a Democrat in Republican clothing, we can vote for McCain, Giuliani, or Huckabee. But after reading this quote (found through my son's blog), I think Thompson probably has clinched my vote.

  1. lol...One quote...from April, and that settles it, you like Thompson?

Read Paul's web site. ( etc.) It's overflowing with stuff like that. The difference is that Ron Paul has a voting record to back it up with.

  2. Thompson was my top choice before, for a variety of reasons. But this quote seems to encapsulate the position on small-govt that I want to see. And yes, Scott, I know you think it's not aiming for a small-enough govt. I would agree with that. But there's one thing about Ron Paul that I just can't get over.

There is some Ron Paul stuff. He said something right around 4:40 is pretty interesting for you Home School folk.

  4. I am wondering what that is as well... you kind of left us hanging :)

  5. I'm wondering too, considering I have yet to find any of Ron Paul's positions that I strongly disagree with.

  6. After wrangling much with the thought that Paul probably doesn't have a chance, I realized that that was my hang-up and it was that thought that was preventing him from progressing. So, at our caucus on February 5 I will be supporting Paul, but my second choice would be Thompson.

  7. I have to agree with AmusedMamma. Often times too many people give up in this prelimm part, and they think "oh that person is great but they probably won't get it so I will vote for blahblah person" This would probably have to be one of the biggest downfalls in our politics in America. We really should vote for who we want, not who we think will win. If more people actually voted for who they wanted then we would probably live in a different state.

I am voting for Paul when it comes time for the votes for WI.

  8. Scott, "Birdo," and Elizabeth, the thing that bothers me about Paul is the determination to pull out of the mid-East as soon as possible. Regardless of whether it was a good or bad decision to get involved there in the first place, it seems to be an open invitation at this point to "come bomb us" when we say "we're leaving, we're going home, bye."

Anonymous sent a You-tube link for Paul's portions from a debate. In the first section, when asked about sacrifices that needed to be made to cut the federal budget, he said there was no need to make any sacrifices at home. All we had to do was cut the foreign and military spending. I think there's plenty that needs to be cut in the domestic budget!

In that You-Tube video, Ron Paul also says he's in favor of tax credits for homeschoolers. That makes me tremendously uneasy (although it is possible that other candidates have the same position.) When the government allows tax credits for homeschoolers, first it puts them in charge of determining what is a valid expense. Second, the government then sees themselves as "subsidizing" homeschools which then gives them the authority to see that "their" money is being spent "properly." I have long believed that Tax Credits For Homeschoolers is an idea from homeschool enemies, or from those who'd like to see a little more control over those homeschool folks out there, or maybe just an idea from people who think that tax credits would be the right thing to do but who haven't thought through the ramifications of that action.

  9. Just so you know... :) I am Cassie Driver :)

    Thanks for answering that.

My one thing I would like to know and perhaps Ron Paul has already said something about this, but I would like to know how he wants to get out of the war. I think it is a great idea but I don't think he will be able to do it as fast as he wants to... but I would rather have a candidate say he wants to get us out of there than the other ones that seem so hell bent on keeping us in that war.

  10. Oh, Cassie, I knew it was you. I just thought (from your blog) that maybe you were trying to maintain online anonymity, and I didn't want to out you. :-)

  11. :-) Oh thanks. No it wasn't that... Birdo is something Paul calls me... a lot of my blog name is kind of an inside joke for me mostly. LOL no one else really knows the meaning of it. I don't care if people know it's me. I know some people do but eh.

  12. Susan, your reason for not being able to vote for Paul (assuming you don't) is the same as ours. I think I like him on just about every other issue but that one. In fact, dh campaigned for him years ago in Texas. But I think he fundamentally just doesn't understand or know how to deal with the terrorist threat. And for me that is a make or break issue.
