Seven Things

Paula tagged me with a meme and a Kreativ Blogger award. Thanks, Paula! I enjoy your blog too, especially the creative things you report from your kids!

I have found copying pictures of blog-awards to be stretching the limits of my ability. I suppose I could figure it out (again!!), but that would mean neglecting some mommy-duties. So if you want to see the award, you'll have to look at somebody else's blog.

The meme calls for

Seven things I did before:
1. Cheer wildly for Illini basketball and football.
2. Gymnastics and pompoms.
3. Read. Books. To myself.
4. Nurse babies.
5. Garden.
6. Sew clothes for myself and my long appendages.
7. Read the newspaper thoroughly.

Seven things I do now:
1. Laundry.
2. House cleaning.
3. Cooking.
4. Sing in choir.
5. Blog too much.
6. Fuss with my glasses on-and-off while I'm still rebelling against succumbing to the need for bifocals.
7. Homeschool two kids.

Seven things I would like to do:
1. Travel in Italy and Greece with Gary, more in the countryside than at the famous historic places.
2. Write a book or two.
3. Learn to relax and not worry about all the things I don't accomplish.
4. Remember how to work the technology (tv, computer, camera, etc) so that my family can teach me these things once each, instead of having to show me a gazillion times.
5. Become near-fluent in German and Greek, and as long as I'm dreaming, maybe Latin too.
6. Play more games with Maggie.
7. Periodically run away to the sunny south to escape the deep, dark days of northern winter.

Seven things that attract me to my husband:
1. That he believes the same doctrine I believe.
2. He loves me.
3. Very cute cheeks.
4. He doesn't waste money.
5. How good he is at fixing things and solving problems.
6. He spends long hours at his job so that I can be a mommy and housewife instead of a wage-earner.
7. When he spends his free time talking to me or helping with the dishes.

Seven favorite foods:
1. Fruit salads.
2. Stir-fry veggies, especially from King Dragon.
3. Seafood alfredo.
4. Sweet-100 cherry tomatoes in August.
5. Chicken breast poached in teriyaki sauce.
6. Hotfresh bread with too much butter.
7. Pizza lentils.

Seven things I say most often:
With the kids:
1. Do you know how many "one" is? Are you sure you can count to 1?
2. Didn't your grandfather teach you that Life Is Not Fair?
3. Did you do your chores yet?
4. Don't ask me again; it's FOOD.
At Bible class:
5. Wait! I have a question!
Other:
6. I better go change the load of laundry.
7. Jesus, save us!

Seven people I am tagging:
1. Maggie -- except she doesn't have a husband, so instead it'll have to be two nice things about each of the people you currently live with -- that'll get you close to 7.
2. Polly.
3-7. Uh... if you're reading this and haven't answered the questions yet, you're welcome to join in.

Seven Random Weird Facts About Me

Cheryl tagged me for a post that includes --well, how obvious is the title?-- seven random facts about me. And for some thoroughly bizarro reason, she expects me to come up with facts more fascinating then her factoids? Silly Cheryl....

1. I have fought and fought with the computer when it won't give me any sound for YouTube videos or for old Issues Etc programs that I am trying to listen to. When I ask my son for help, he again and again patiently explains that I must turn ON the speakers for the sound to come out. After being repeatedly embarrassed in front of him, I can now remember to turn the speakers on after only a few seconds of fidgeting with the computer, panicking over why the sound is "broken."

2. Whenever we move and find a new dentist, I must always explain my three broken teeth. Two happened in a "trust game" in grade school, and one happened when the neighborhood bully threw a rock at me and hit me in the face with it as I biked to school. Boy, maybe that explains why I don't think so much of either school socialization or "trust games."

3. When we started homeschooling, I was captivated by the ideas presented by Cornerstone Curriculum. (By the way, my opinions have changed.) I remember how they denigrated the Impressionists because that style of art was the first downhill step in moving away from exact depictions of reality, and moving instead toward feelings about reality. I knew nothing about art. We didn't do that in public school. But as we continued homeschooling, and discovered an art series that even I could understand, I discovered that I like the Impressionists. I felt guilty about it for a while. Sometimes still do. Nevertheless, I am crazy about Renoir's Luncheon on the Boat, and it hangs over my computer.

4. We've been doing most of our cleaning on Tuesdays for some reason. I told the kids that I wanted to spend two hours cleaning yesterday so that we wouldn't have that hanging over our heads while Paul is home for the weekend. So we did! Two hours! The house is by no means spotless or dustfree or cobweb-free, but it's perfectly decent. In two hours. If we can do that every week, the knowledge that it is ONLY TWO HOURS will make it so much easier to keep up with the cleaning.

5. Cheri told me it's time to change to a winter purse because mine is very summery, with a kind of "woven grass" look, in pastel blue and green and purple. And I have SO much fashion sense that I said, "Huh?" But she's right. But I still haven't changed purses. Probably won't.

6. When I was doing my exercise-walking yesterday, I noticed that my footprints in the snow are in a very very straight line. All that time on a balance beam in years past still leaves its imprint. [Pun! Ha!]

7. In high school once, I remember that my dad had told me I needed to wash the car one day when I had wanted to go do something with my friends. I was mad. If he was going to make me miss my event to wash the car, I would show him. I would just spend the whole day washing the car. I would polish the hubcaps, and I would dust and buff the dashboard, and I would vacuum under the seats, and I would clean out the trunk, and I would empty the ashtrays of their stash of gum-wrappers, and I would scrub all the stickiness and every smidge of dirt off the steering wheel. I would not only wash the car's outsides, but I would wax it too. Boy, that'd show him how upset I was that he interfered with my plans with my friends! (Now, if it were me as the parent, I would start interfering with my kids' plans a whole lot more if that was how my kids exhibited stubbornness! LOL!)

Okay, I'm supposed to tag some other people. How about Maggie and Maggie, Naomi, and Rick?

Tag!

Okay, I'm slow. Angie tagged me to play a long time ago, during symposium, right before VBS, and I was not keeping up very well on blogs right then.

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?

That was about the time I had the good garden because Beau (a borrowed horse) had spent a few months fertilizing a portion of the yard over winter. I was homeschooling one high-schooler, three grade-schoolers, and a kindergartner, and had just finished a short stint with Maggie going to a speech therapist. It was also the summer that Pr Fenton suggested I needed a father-confessor that I wasn't married to, and he and my husband helped me find one. I was also just beginning to discover what it was like to have all my children weaned and not be pregnant -- weird at the time.

2. What are 5 things on my to-do list for today (in no particular order)?
*return videos to Blockbuster
*pick cherries and turn them into something delicious
*buy rechargeable batteries for the battery-eating camera
*ask the neighbor for permission to have a dump truck use his driveway for access to our septic tank, bringing in more top-soil after the dirt settled around the new tanks
*move the email addresses from the old computer to the new one

3. Snacks I enjoy:
tortilla chips with guacamole
warm chocolate-chip cookies
fruit smoothies

4. Things I would do if I were a billionaire:
Pay off kids' student loans.
Pay off the house, and have Gary quit his cubicle job to do something else.
Give a whole lot of money to church and to some libraries.

Travel more.
Freely spend money on organic foods and raw milk products.
Buy an Aqua-massage for our home.
And a pool WITH a pool-boy.
Come up with a business where I could hire homeschooled teens.

5. Places I have lived:
central Illinois
River Forest
St Louis
Mississippi for a year
three different places in Wisconsin

6. Jobs I have had:
worked at two fast-food restaurants
printer at two print-shops
lots of maid work during college & sem
one year of in-home day-care
typing theses and term papers
paper routes (motor routes and foot routes)
supervision of paper-carriers

7. People I would like to know more about (in no particular order):
I lost track of who's been tagged for this and who hasn't. I think Rachel and Katie could still be tagged. I don't think I saw Paula's answers, so she may not have been tagged yet. How about Melody and Laura? (I'm getting old enough that I can't remember if I saw responses to this meme in the last couple of weeks or if it was a year ago.)

Meme

Liz and Jeff tagged me for a quick and easy meme. The instructions are to grab the nearest book, turn to page 123, go down to the fifth sentence, and post the next three sentences.

Well, the computer is next to the piano, so the nearest book is TLH. Page 123 is the start of the psalm section. And sentences 6-8 are
Why do the heathen rage and the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, "Let us break their bands asunder and cast away their cords from us."

Let's tag..... hmmm, I can't remember who I haven't tagged for a while....
Scott, Muddy Boots, Paula, Kristi, and a certain Lutheran Woman,

Three Christmas Memories

Emily started her own meme of sharing Three Christmas Memories that you have, be they good or bad, hilarious or just plain odd. (I'm not linking to Emily's particular blogpost, but to her site. Several of her recent postings have just been too good to miss! So go look at the whole blog.)

So a few of my memories:
1. I remember when I was very small -- one of my earliest memories. There was a big box under the tree. I was very very interested in that big box. I don't know if Mom told me it was boots for Grandpa, or if she just suggested that it might be boots for Grandpa, but I know that it was A Confirmed TRUTH in my little head that that box held galoshes for my dad's pa.

2. My brother and I are very close in age, and my sister came along a little later. She was beginning to get skeptical about the existence of Santa. Old enough to want to believe, but not quite able to believe. When I took the trash out on Christmas Eve, I came rushing back into the house, gasping, all excited, pointing to the sky, and saying I heard sleigh bells overheard. It's possible my sister was just going along with the game, but she sure seemed to buy it.

3. When Gary was at sem, there was an annual Christmas-shopping night that was held in connection with Mrs Graudin's resale shop. People throughout St Louis and the country would send clothes and furniture and toys and household items to the sem, to be distributed to the poor seminarians and their families. (Groceries too, but that came through the nurse's office.) Mrs G would reserve some of the nice things that would make good Christmas-gift items, and put them out one night in early December. Some of us would do virtually all our Christmas shopping at this sale, spending $10 or $20. I guess that is especially fresh in my mind right now as I am weeding out too-much-stuff in our house. And there's one toy, one dear toy, that I'm not sure I can give to Goodwill or sell or even pass along to friends. And it came from one of those Christmas resale shopping-nights. There were other very nice things we found too, and wonderful gifts that friends picked up for their families. But this particular set of blocks is still precious to me after 20+ years. So THANK YOU to all you people who donate to the seminaries' clothing banks and food banks!!!

I think I'm going to tag Barbara and Rick and Elizabeth and Paula.

Class Wish-List

Jane tagged me a while ago, and I've been tardy about responding. Now there's probably nobody left to tag because the meme has been making its rounds. So here's the plan, if you want to play, consider yourself tagged. (Boy, I just take the lazy gal's way out way too often, don't I?)

According to the original poster, the rules for this meme are: "Devise a list of 5-10 courses you would take to fix your life. It’s more fun to be in classes with friends, so include one class from the person who tagged you that you’d also like to take. Tag five." Like Barbara said, I'm not sure about these classes being "fix-its." But they are things I'd like to study.

1. Piano and organ. I learned some piano when I was younger, but I want to spend time on being good at it. And I'd like to be able to transfer that over to organ too.

2. Business management. Not about running the business and providing a good service and keeping accounts. But hoop-jumping. All the stuff a person would need to know to comply with the burdensome government regulations: employing minors, abiding by safety regulations, paying complicated taxes, properly labeling food items, liability insurance, kitchen inspections, etc.

3. Alternative health measures. Particularly herbology. But also massage and acupressure.

4. Knitting. Last winter I realized that every chilly breeze across my neck caused painful knots in my back. Finally I wised up and knitted myself a pretty scarf. When Nathan saw me knitting, he was shocked. "What are YOU doing knitting??" Oh, I loved it! The clack of those wooden needles. The restfulness. I would like to knit more. But all I can do are potholders and scarves and other straight stitches.

5. Language. German would be my first choice. But I'd like to be fluent in Greek and ideally learn some Latin too. Spanish would be nice, as far as communicating with the people around me. But German is most important: I want to read Gerhardt and Heermann and Luther hymns and know what they actually say!

6. Photography. I like pictures. And I'm so bad at taking them. With digital cameras, there's not the huge cost-factor of learning. This is the one I'd like to take with Jane (who tagged me) because she takes a lot of very nice pictures, so she could give me pointers!

7. Decorating and fashion. I don't do pretty. I have no sense of how to decorate a house, how to put flowers in a yard, how to put on make-up or dress stylishly. I can recognize what's pretty when I see it. But I have no clue whatsoever of how to make anything pretty. I'm beginning to wish I could do that.

Looking at that list, I guess I could actually make a case (convoluted though it might be) that the first five would in some small way "fix my life." But the last two would definitely be for pleasure only.

Tagged (Sevens)

The tag-game running around [ha ha!] the blogs these days is to tell seven true things about yourself. Laura and Melynda and an amusing one tagged me. And now I
1) have to think of seven things, (ooooh, the brain strain!) and
2) come up with taggees. It seems like most of the homeschoolers have been tagged, so I'm going try tagging Kirken and Emily and Erin, and the youngsters: Liz, Anthea, Katie, Rachel, Cassie. (Shhhh. 3+5=7. Shhhhh. Yes, it does. This is a tag meme about sevens. I can do the New Math if I wanna!!!)

The rules of this are:
1. Link the person who has tagged you.
2. Tell seven true things about yourself.
3. Tag seven new people.
4. Leave a message with the person you have tagged so they know about it.

1) I cannot remember the color of my toothbrush. Old age and fading memory make it hard enough to figure out which toothbrush is mine. Buuut having to keep track of TWO toothbrushes, annnd having their colors change every six months (luck of the draw in what the dental hygienist hands me in my goodie-bag), that's just too much. So I have a pony-tail band wrapped around the handle of one toothbrush to distinguish. On the other, I've marked my initial with a black Sharpie, but I have to re-ink the initial every few weeks.

2) I have friends (couples and widows) and family members who are DOWNsizing to retirement condos larger than the house I live in with five other people. And I didn't even think our house was that small.

3) The first time I got called "ma'am" was in 7th or 8th grade. Because I was so tall, the saleslady knew that no kid could be possibly that height, so I was called "ma'am" instead of "miss" or "hey, kid." I suppose "freaky tall-person" may have worked just as well.

4) I don't recall ever hanging pictures of boys in my bedroom as a teen. If that memory is correct (which is definitely not a sure thing -- see item #1), then my first "pin-up boy" was a picture of David Scaer from a CTS calendar about 4-5 years ago. I liked that lively picture so much that I didn't change the month on the calendar for the rest of the year, and I lobbied to get that particular classroom-photo used in one of his books. (I doubt my begging worked, though.)

5. I used to be a gymnast. It is hard for a very very tall person (see item #3) to fit the required number of backflips into a pass on the diagonal of the floor-exercise mat, without falling off the edge of the mat and crashing into the spectators' seats. And you had to screw and screw and screw the knobs forEVER to adjust the parallel bars to be big enough (far apart enough and high enough) for me to circle the bar without smashing my head into the other bar or the floor.

6. I'm more used to white noise than I thought. I had to sleep at a friend's house the other night. They have bedrooms upstairs. The noise of the quietness throbbed loudly. No refrigerator motor cycling. No noise of dehumidifiers running in the basement. No cats thumping through the house. No traffic passing. No computer fans. Even the sound of constant wind was missing.

7. I don't know how to relax and play any more. Except by watching tv. I only know how to work feverishly. This is not a good thing.

Fashion

Rachel tagged me for the "Personal Style Quiz" that's making its way around our friends and acquaintances. I'm not tagging anybody else because I can't remember who's done it and who hasn't, and I don't want to go look.

Rules: You have to choose one of the two. You cannot answer "neither" or "both." You can indicate that you like both or neither, but you must state a preference.

Animal fiber or plant?
Plant. I like cotton but love linen. Wool itches.

Natural or synthetic?
Natural.

Ornate or simple?
Simple to the point of boring.

Color or Neutral?
Probably color. Although... the blue in blue jeans is something I treat as a neutral, and that might change the answer.

Pastel or Vibrant?
I have equal amounts of both. But the red I like is vibrant so I'll pick that.

Blue/Green or Red/Orange?
This is the nastiest question on the whole quiz. I like blue and dislike most greens on me. I love red and don't want to wear orange (unless it's Illini orange, but that's disconnected from fashion). I refuse to answer on the grounds that "blue/red" is not set in opposition to "green/orange." So there!

White Gold or Yellow Gold?
Easiest question on the quiz -- yellow gold!

Gems or texture?
Huh? Gems? Texture? Where? I say ditto to Rachel's answer: "I lack the necessary fashion vocabulary and cannot answer this question." Even reading other people's answers hasn't given me enough of a clue to understand this question.

Watch or no-watch?
No watch. I kept jamming watches. Too much wiggling and movement, so those "self-wind watches" would always get overwound on my wrist and stop running.

Comfort or fashion?
Oh, wait. I take it back. This question is as easy as the one about yellow gold. COMFORT! I look dorky, but I'm comfortable.

Trendy or classic?
Classic.

Cables or lace?
Cables? What, in socks and sweaters? Some of my favorite dresses have had white lace collars. But I suppose I have more cable-knit sweaters than I have lacey things.

Heels or flats?
Oh, look, another no-brainer. FLATS.

Flip-flops or sandals?
Birkenstock sandals.

Skirts or pants?
Since jeans are pants, the answer must be pants.

Geometric or floral?
Geometric? Would that include stripes? I think I have more stripes than florals, but no other geometrics.

V-neck or turtle-neck?
Turtle neck. And even more so after last winter's multiple trips to the chiropractor because of cold breezes on my neck.

Skulls or butterflies?
I don't think I have any butterflies, but it would be a possibility. But I don't think I'd ever be happy with anything with skulls.

Loose or snug?
Loose. (Remember that question on comfort?)

Long hair or short?
Long. Short hair makes an ostrich-neck look even longer.

Headbands or barrettes?
Why is SCRUNCHI not an option? Headbands look better on me than barrettes, but they usually make the backs of my ears hurt. Cloth headband, however, would usually be preferable to barrettes.

Shoulder bag or handbag?
Shoulder bag.

Thinker?

Jane (the one who arm-twisted me into blogging) nominated me for a Thinking Blogger award.

I'm not sure that I'm eligible, or that I'm even capable of joining in. I've been diligently trying to AVOID thinking. There are blogs I love to read but have been trying to discipline myself to avoid, or to check in very infrequently. I cook and I wash the clothes, I say my prayers and do schoolwork with the kids, and sometimes I clean house or do some editing. But thinking? That takes time. And effort. And gosh darn it, it's FUN and I can go overboard with it. So I've been trying so hard not to think and just do what I'm given to do. And here comes Jane, trying to get me to list the blogs that I enjoy that make me think. Oy!

The rules are
1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think.
2. Link to this post so everyone can easily find the exact origin of the meme.
3. Optional: Proudly display the 'Thinking Blogger Award' with a link to the post that you wrote.

Given that Jane, Pr Stuckwisch, and Barbara were all tagged this week, I guess I'm not allowed to have them on my list (although I would've chosen them). So I think I will bestow the award on the blogs that I succumb to even though they make me think more than I wish to think:

Pastor Petersen
Pastor Weedon

A New Tag

Ah, I finally got to see the tag-game that Jenn started. It showed up on Lora's blog, and I got re-tagged. Okay, so the assignment is: "What did you want to be when you were 5, 10, 15, and 20?

Age 5: That's so long ago. I can't even remember my kids' names or where my keys are or if I put that last load of laundry in the dryer. I'm thinking maybe (?) I wanted to be a ballerina. Or a mommy. Or both. Maybe my mom will remember better.

Age 10: A school teacher.

Age 15: A DCE. And yes, I must steal Cheryl's answer: I wanted to be popular.

Age 20: A wife and mommy.

Being Tagged

Emily tagged me to name seven things that I have learned in life. Yikesy -- this is the hardest tag game I've ever played!

1. America would be a happier place if more of us dried our clothes outdoors on the line more often.

2. When you have to fight Satan, make sure you have a faithful father-confessor on your side.

3. Not all children learn to sing naturally. Some have to be taught. And singing CAN be taught. And they should learn to do it.

4. Sometimes it's more frugal to spend more money upfront. (As is the case with buying underwear from Penneys and buying electrical appliances from anywhere but Walmart.)

5. Those who fight hardest to silence the Gospel are usually within the church.

6. Always patronize kids' lemonade stands, even if they're selling weird green koolaid.

7. Things I've learned in life? Sympathy for the dairy cows when the farmer is late for milking time.

Now, whom have I not tagged recently?
Melynda
Presbytera
Glenda
Anthea
Pr Stuckwisch

Seven Things

My friend Jane tagged some of us to list seven random, uninteresting things about ourselves. So here goes:

1. "Feeder" goldfish seem to live longer at my house than do the fish intended to be pets.

2. I wear Birkenstock sandals, even in the winter.

3. Every family vacation has had a big-time school fieldtrip worked into it.

4. After having a baby, I'm not worn out and exhausted, and I can't get to sleep for at least 12 hours.

5. I didn't get my drivers license on my 16th birthday because the DMV was closed that day, so I had to wait another whole long day.

6. I like Renoir.

7. It took me 22 months to paint my kitchen.

I'm supposed to tag seven people. How's about we try: Katie, Rachel, Karin, Jenny, Lora, Elizabeth, and Kim? But if you can't, you can't.

What's in Your Fridge?

Jane started this and tagged everybody.
I'm sure that all of us have lots of stuff in our fridges, so list just five things in each category. Pick what makes your fridge original, embarrassing or average. It's up to you; I've chosen to pick some of the odder things. (It'll give y'all something to laugh at.) I'm tagging Katie and anybody else who wants to play --except Coral who's not allowed until after tests.

On the Shelves: whole-wheat home-made tortillas, leftover baked yams, leftover clam sauce for pasta, eggs from happy chickens, and whey.

Drinks: I only have five different things at the moment. Milk, Irish cream, red wine, Leinie Red, and Leinie Honey Weiss. (It sounds like we drink virtually nothing but liquor, but the reality is that the juice gets inhaled about 18 seconds after it's transferred from the freezer to the refrigerator.)

In the Cheese Drawer: Swiss, feta, mozzarella, cream cheese, and cheddar.

In the Produce Bin: Fuji apples, cabbage, organic carrots, iceberg lettuce, and mushrooms.

In the Door: lard, home-made peach jelly, Kikkoman's honey-pineapple teriyaki glaze (yowza!!), pepperocinis, and home-made mayonnaise.

In the Freezer: spices, fruit for smoothies, leftover daquiri from the wedding, suprema dophilus, and ice-cubes made of red-cabbage juice (intended for use in science experiments as a litmus test).
