Three dig-outs and counting.
This stuff is WAY lighter and easier to shovel than the Snow of Good Friday '08. (That was overwhelming: shovel, church, shovel, church, shovel, church, shovel. A memorable day.) I expect the light fluffiness, however, will mean we get to shovel the same snow multiple times when the winds start. ;-)
So does anybody besides us use an actual old-fashioned shovel instead of a snow blower or a plow?

I use a shovel when I can't get the blower started - which is often.
ReplyDeleteWe have a blower but find it easier to use teenager-powered shovels most of the time. The snowblower is noisy and smelly and a lot of trouble to plug in (it's an electric start) and get going. But last night in anticipation of the Blizzard of 2011 my husband made sure the blower was fueled up and ready to go.
ReplyDeleteWe use both. Our drive is VERY long and we bought the thing years ago. It is getting a work out. We were going to sell it but it was worth more to us to keep it than to sell it. We were thinking 6 boys could keep up. Well....to their relief, we kept the snow blower.
ReplyDeleteWell, we use a shovel, but we don't usually get a lot of snow. And a few weeks ago when we got a record snowfall, a neighbor with a plow did our driveway.
ReplyDeleteMy 4 year old was talking to a teenager at church about shoveling. The teenager kept trying to correct him and said, "You mean snowblow, right?" The teenager thought I was crazy because I said, "No, he means shoveling with a shovel!"
ReplyDeleteAfter dh had surgery he can't shovel for very long before he's exhausted. Some church members have come over to help with their snowblowers for some of the snowfalls and we really appreciate that. But once he is completely healed, we will be back to only shovel no matter how much snow we get.
We use shovels. . .or, rather, we send our rowdy boys out to use shovels. :)
ReplyDeleteShovels here. :)
ReplyDeleteShovels only. Sometimes our neighbor will do part of our front sidewalk. Living on a corner, near a school means that we have about 300 feel of sidewalk to keep clear.
ReplyDeleteWow. So we're not the only weirdos. Being the only ones in the neighborhood who use shovels, it's nice to know there are others out there, possibly being the oddballs in their own neighborhoods. :-)
ReplyDeleteGary found it interesting that several people at work said the snow was too much for the snowblower. When it's little enough for the snowblowers to work well, then it's not a big deal to use the shovels.
I am very thankful, however, for the neighbor who comes now and then with his plow when the snow is very deep. We usually have to clean the driveway by hand so that we can get out to go to work, and that's long before he comes over to help. But still, sometimes he makes a huge difference in the amount of effort (and muscle strain) we expend.
Shovels here. But if we continue to have VERY heavy snowfall winters, we'll be watching Craigslist for a second-hand snowblower. We don't (yet) have a teen able to assist the dig-out of serious storms like this one was. Dh has some back issues, I'm prone to injuring myself for no particular reason. It would be nice to have a snowblower for large storms. We'd probably leave it in the garage for anything under 6" accumulation, though!
