Frontline Plus

We seldom deal with fleas here. When the cats run across a flea or two, they usually take care of it themselves and don't become infested. On occasion, I have to apply Frontline Plus. That usually only happens once or twice a year; I don't keep up with dosing them every 4-6 weeks.

Last time I needed the drugs, I ordered online instead of buying it from the local vet or pet-supply store. I'm not doing that again. I don't know what's different, but the fleas seem to be merely suppressed, and they make a return shortly before the 4-week mark. It may be cheaper per bottle to buy from Pet Meds, but it has turned out to be more expensive because I need a lot more bottles.

  1. Bummer. I was going to try the online version in the spring. Thanks for the heads-up on its poor performance. Gonna have to find a local vet.

  2. Fleas! $#%^&#$%@$!!! Don't even get me started on super duper flea-infested Virginia. GRRR. The vet said 80% of the dogs coming through his office have fleas, and they're on flea prevention meds (like Frontline)! Lucy had them for a couple months straight. Even people without pets down here have flea-infested homes because they bring the fleas in on their pant legs and shoes.

After flea-bombing our home a couple times, vacuuming everyday, and a 30˚ drop in the weather, the fleas are under control, and we're all much less itchy now.

That's all for my angry tirade.

I have never bought Frontline from anywhere but the vet. I think I'll stick to that.

  3. Make sure it's real Frontline.

  4. According to the EPA's website, it looks like I have something genuine, not a counterfeit. Maybe it's just a fluke that these bottles don't seem to have as effective a medicine as what I usually buy from the vet or the local pet store. Or maybe they're old. Or maybe there's a different explanation as to why the fleas seem worse for the poor kitties.

  5. Maybe it's just the year for fleas. This Spring/Summer everything was fleas fleas fleas where we were. Just walking to get your mail you could end up with one on your foot.

There's still a bottle of flea spray in the closet, you can use that on the couches where the cats spend the most time. It could help.

  6. Move to Utah! We don't have fleas :) The Deseret News says: "The insects are particularly rare in Utah, where dry, arid weather and high altitude are not the ideal conditions for them. Fleas like a humid, warm environment." And for me that also means NO ROACHES. My brother has a big black lab and she never suffers with the pesky bugs.

  7. Our vet asked us to not buy it from Pet Meds (or any other online source). They are so skeptical of its authenticity that they'll match Pet Meds prices, because they want the animals to have the real stuff.

  8. Karen, after my venture this fall, I'm convinced. I bought Frontline at two different local pet stores since we moved. That stuff worked as well as the meds we bought from the vet back at the old homestead. But these bottles from Pet Meds don't seem to measure up.
